Stopped for Questioning?

  • Stay calm! Do not run from, argue with, resist, or obstruct the police. Do so even if you feel that you have done nothing wrong and that the police are violating your rights. Do not handle your case in the streets. LET US HANDLE IT… IN COURT.
  • Keep your hands where the police can see them
  • Announce your movements before you make them, i.e. retrieving your ID or other documents.
  • Ask if you are free to leave. If the officer says “yes” calmly walk away. If he says “no” you have the right to know why.
  • If you are questioned at home, you do not have to speak with any law enforcement agency if they do not have a warrant. If you choose to speak with them, step outside of your home and close the door.
